About the Event

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) held a virtual discussion on Tuesday, May 26, from 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. ET on the recently released paper Who Will Make Money on AI? A Discussion Paper on Aligning Commercial Incentives with National Security Interests, co-authored by Emily Kilcrease, senior fellow and director of the CNAS energy, economics, and security program, and Geoff Gertz, senior fellow with the CNAS energy, economics, and security program.

The private sector is leading the development of frontier AI, yet plans to commercialize AI remain highly uncertain. How commercial incentives shape the future of AI markets could have serious implications for U.S. national security interests, including whether there is market demand for investments in AI safety and security. National security policymakers will have to look beyond traditional policy levers, such as export controls, to consider how to shape AI markets that both work commercially and advance U.S. national security.

The virtual panel included Daniel Remler, senior fellow with the CNAS Technology and National Security program; Gabrielle Tran, senior associate for technology and society at the Institute for Security and Technology; Emily Kilcrease, senior fellow and program director of the CNAS Energy, Economics and Security program; and Janet Egan, senior fellow and deputy director with the CNAS Technology and National Security Program.
